On this Trinity Sunday, we consider the importance of Christians continuing to study the Word of God as we study the Christ's Great Commission. Our faith is a gift from God. The Gospel in Word and Sacrament are the only means of grace through which God has promised to strengthen our faith. The work Christ has given to us, his people, is to go and make disciples of all nations using these means of grace.

The need for God to strengthen our faith becomes more clear as we consider what God reveals about himself in Scripture--that he is three in one and one in three. This, along with so many other truths about God and his will, are believed through the gift of faith.

May God grant us the discipline to be faithful disciples as we diligently study his Word, seek the forgiveness found in his sacrament, and share the message of Christ and his victory over death with all nations.

Follwing Christ means more than going simply worshiping on a Sunday morning. It involves learning and living the teachings of Christ every day. If we simply follow whatever direction our sinful nature leads us without learning God's desire for our lives and resisting temptation, we are only pretending to follow the Lord.

Following Christ means denying the desires of our sinful nature and following the path of righteousness which God reveals through his Holy Word. When we honestly examine our lives, we can see just how much we needed a Savior from our many sins and failings. For all of the times we have set aside our cross because of mere discomfort, Jesus bore the cross weighted with the sins of the entire world and suffered our punishment.

As difficult as it might be sometimes to bear the cross of living as a Christian, it is the only path which leads to heaven--the path of following the Savior who bore the cross of our sins for our salvation. May God grant us the strength to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness instead of always seeking what is beneficial for ourselves.

The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked with downcast faces and hearts filled with disappointment concerning what had happened to Jesus the previous week. Although Jesus predicted both his death and his resurrection, the disciples were looking for an earthly victory instead of the heavenly victory Christ had won for them. Even when Jesus appeared beside them and spoke with them, they still did not recognize all he had accomplished on their behalf.

Sometimes we can do the same thing. Jesus can be right in front of us in his holy Word and Sacraments, but we can be so distracted by this life that we don't recognize him. Our Lord may be next to us in the person who is helping us or someone who is suffering and needs our help, but we are too busy in our own lives and with our own ideas of what God wants us to do, that we fail to see his true presence in our lives. We can even feel disappointed in God because we try and hold him to promises he never made to us.

We can learn an important lesson from the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We cannot rightly see and understand Christ's work without looking into the Scriptures. We can sometimes take them for granted, but the Scriptures are the source of wisdom and strength which God has given us as we walk our own road to heaven.

May we always cherish the Holy Scriptures and the Christ whom they reveal to us.

We wonder if we are capable at our jobs; if we are up to the standards set for us by other; whether or not we are doing what we should be with our lives, etc. Yet, the doubts created when facing death can be the most frightening doubts of all.

The Christian faith is not something perceived by the senses or rationalized by the intellect. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit, given and strengthened through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments. When we have doubts as Christians, it is import that we go back to the source from which our faith came to us in the first place--the Gospel. If we look to ourselves for security, we will not find it. The answer for us is to go to Christ in his Word and be reminded of his love and his sacrifice for us. It is here we see that although we have made mistakes, we trust in Christ's strength and perfection which he shares with us through our faith.

It is this promise of our own resurrection and life after death which removes our fears and gives us a peace which helps bring us through the turbulent times of life. The longer we live the more our sins and mistakes add up. When our end finally comes we might wonder if Jesus will really forgive us for the wrongs we have done.

The words of Jesus to the women at the tomb remind us of how forgiving Jesus is to those who look to him in repentance. Our Easter celebrations on earth are meant to help us see the victory over death won for us so many years ago. That victory will our most precious possession one day when we leave this world and enter the heaven Jesus earned for us. May we never minimize the agony God's Son suffered so that we can live without fear in this life and in hope for the life to come. It can be easy for us to lose perspective as we suffer in this life. However, Christ understands our suffering, for he, himself, suffered and died, but conquered death.

May God grant all of us the humility to approach the cross in repentance over our sins and the peace of knowing that what took place on that instrument of pain and death so long ago was done out of love for us and for our salvation.

Christians of every generation have cried out to the Lord for help in their times of trouble. God always answers our prayers, but we are not always good at accepting the answer he gives us. Jesus rode into Jerusalem as God's answer the the prayer of "Hosanna" (Hebrew for, "please save"). Many were disappointed in the type of Savior God had sent. Yet, God knew their greatest need was one who could save them from punishment after death.

Sometimes we, too, may feel disappointed when God doesn't answer our prayers in the way we would like. When we feel this way, it is important to remember that God often uses hardships to help us draw closer to him and to turn our eyes away from our own earthly needs and to our spiritual needs and the life to come. When our forgiveness and salvation in Christ is the center of our Christian lives, we worry less about ourselves and seek to be the instruments of peace in the lives of others as we serve him who saved us.

Jesus wept, too. As a true human being, Jesus understood the pain of losing a friend to death.

Jesus didn't raise Lazarus so that he could live here on earth forever. He raised him to demonstrate his power over death and that he is able to keep his promises, even if no one else could do so. In the conversation between Jesus and Mary and Martha, we learn that important lesson of turning to Jesus when we feel helpless in the face of our troubles. Jesus will help us when we face hard times--even when we face death itself. He loves us and listens to our cries for help.

"You are worried and upset about many things..." How easily could Jesus speak to us the same words he spoke to his friend Martha? All of us face trouble in our lives. Often the trouble comes unexpectedly and without warning. As Jesus was visiting Mary and Martha that day, they could not have known that in just a few years their brother, Lazarus, would become sick and they would be mourning his death. But Jesus knew this event was approaching for the sisters.

Martha was worried and upset about things that would seem unimportant when her brother was sick and dying, or when she was preparing his body for burial. Jesus' words to Martha are an important lesson for us to learn. In the future, we will all face troubles which will challenge our life and our faith. The time to prepare for those challenges is now and the way to prepare is to draw closer to Jesus through his Gospel. Like Martha, we may have many things to do today, but carving our some time to read the Word of God, through which the Holy Spirit strengthens our faith, will prepare us for those times of trouble we will face.

"...but only one thing is needed." This is second part of Jesus' advice to Martha. We can be sure that trouble will come into our lives in the future. However, we can also be sure that the God who loves us will bring us through those troubles if we turn to him and lean on his strength when we feel weak and overwhelmed. May God grant us the humility and the strength to seek him today, so that we will be prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

Matthew 4:1-11
At the very start of his public ministry, immediately after his baptism, the Spirit led Jesus not to Jerusalem or to Rome, but out into the desert where he was tempted by the devil. With only three years remaining until his crucifixion, surely we would have sent Jesus to the most populated places so that more people would hear his preaching.

However, as we think of Jesus and the work he did to earn our salvation, we can easily forget the fact that God became man so that he could perfectly resist the temptations all of us face in our lives. We needed a Savior who could live in a sinful world yet resist the sins into which we so often fall.

As we consider this interesting text and the dialogue between Jesus and the devil, may each of us examine our own hearts and see those temptations to sin, which we must work harder to resist. Often, the greatest struggles against sin are fought internally and when we feel alone. Thanks be to God that we are never alone in our fight against sin. Jesus is there with us and our failures in the face of temptation are covered over by the perfect life he lived for us and in our place.

The Father spoke from heaven telling the disciples to listen to his Son. Jesus' glory was revealed before them as he shone like the sun.

Most importantly, this event in Jesus' life shows that the plan of salvation works. Moses and Elijah appeared with him on the mountain, even though they had died centuries earlier. This text gives wonderful hope to all of us who miss people have gone into heaven before us. Our loved ones are still the people they were when we knew them here on earth. We will one day be with them, talk with them, and live eternally with them in the perfection and joy of heaven.

The question is, are we as God's people doing what God wants us to do as we serve him? The reality is that all of us have followed God's will so poorly that Christ came here to pay the penalty for our sins. In is only by relying on Christ's perfect life and sacrificial death that we can hope to enter heaven. Until we stand before Jesus on the last day, he was given us work to do: share his message of salvation and to show the same love he has shown to us by caring for other in their needs.

We all know the account of the Magi seeking out the newborn Savior and presenting him with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After celebrating Jesus' birth and giving gifts to so many others, did Jesus receive the gift he wants from you and me? What Jesus wants is our devotion to him as our Lord and Redeemer. He desires to rule in our hearts with his peace as he leads us through life and works through us to share that peace with others. Just as the Magi went on a long journey to see their King face to face, we, as God's people, are on our own pilgrimage to stand before Jesus and worship him. Instead of doing so in Bethlehem, we will join the Magi in the place where they now worship him--in our heavenly home.

Most of us know the account of the Annunciation, but there is much for us to ponder and to learn from the message God gave to Mary through the angel Gabriel. Mary was told that she would be the mother of God's Son, the long-awaited Messiah, but she was not given any answers as to how she would cope with the changes this would bring to her life. She simply trusted God's plan for her.

During a year of so many changes and uncertainties, God's people today need to hear the message of "Do not be afraid" that Gabriel delivered to Mary. Facing a Christmas without all of the usual traditions might seem frightening to many. However, Christmas is about the birth of our Savior. Most of our traditions such as trees, familiar hymns, even beautifully decorated church buildings came centuries after the first Christmas, but the work of our Savior was still effective.

In this challenging year, we have the opportunity to focus all the more closely on Jesus and what his birth means to us. May God's peace be with all of you as you prepare to celebrate the arrival of your Savior, Jesus.

At Christmastime, we often talk about peace and joy. For many, however, this is a difficult time of year. As servants of the Prince of Peace, we are called to bring peace to others. However, we cannot share with others what we, ourselves, to not possess. If we wish to find an eternal peace, we must seek this peace with the eternal God.

As Christians, we celebrate Christmas because our Savior was born in Bethlehem. The traditions are nice, but they are not the true meaning of Christmas--Christ is the center of our celebration and the only source of lasting peace. Knowing that an eternal peace in heaven, earned by Jesus' with his death on the cross, is our constant comfort and peace each day of our lives.

Many in our world are struggling with various unexpected challenges this year and need the peace and you and I can offer them. To do so, we must take some time each day to remind ourselves of how God served us in our greatest need by sending a Savior. Only then can we seek to serve others as we serve the Prince of Peace.

If we seek to serve our Savior, the place to begin is in his Word, where we are reminded of our sins and the price Christ paid for our forgiveness. As servants of the King, we should remember the great power he uses to protect his people. Revelation describes him in this way: "I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him..." (Revelation 19)

Christ is the Almighty King who rules all things for the good of his people. We can take solace in knowing we are his servants and that we live our lives as part of his kingdom and under his protection.

This is the first of the 95 Theses which Martin Luther nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517. In this sermon on Revelation 14:6-7, we remember that on which the Reformation focused: the eternal Gospel.

Each of us as human beings has sins, faults, and failings. Forgiveness was earned for all of those mistakes by our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He suffered the punishment we deserved so that we might live in the hope of everlasting life in heaven. Because we sin every day, we must strive daily to recognize our sins, turn from those sins and seek forgiveness in Christ who died for us. May God grant us strength in the face of temptation and grant us peace in knowing we are forgiven in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Facing death is something which all of us must do. The events surrounding the Transfiguration of Jesus remind us that there is a life after death and that God's plan of salvation is effective. Although earthly lives of Moses and Elijah had ended centuries before, these two human beings had not ceased to exist. When death touches our lives, either by the death of someone we love or when we know that our own death is near, this text from Matthew 17 brings us a comfort which comes from heaven itself. In heaven are waiting all those faithful who have gone before us. They continue to exist just as Moses and Elijah lived after the end of their earthly lives. Most importantly, Jesus experienced death, but did what we cannot do--conquered death and rose triumphant from the grave. One day he will come for each of us when our time on earth has run its course, and he will take us to be with those whom we long to see again in heaven.

As Christians living through the challenges of 2020, we also may become weary and frustrated like Elijah. Like Elijah, however, we also serve the same almighty and merciful God who has work for us to do as we serve him in this world. No matter how bad the situation might seem, this event in the life of the prophet reminds us to never give up hope. God has a plan for our lives and our world and his plan is the one that will lead us to heaven.

In Luke chapter 18, Jesus reminds his people why we need his Word in our lives. We are sinners who deserve God's punishment. It is only though God's underserved love and the faith he has given us as gift that we have the hope of everlasting life.

This truth keeps us humble. When we remember the perfection of God and forgiveness he offers to his imperfect creatures, it changes how we view others. As Christians, we must always see every human being as a sinner no different than ourselves. God forgave us in his mercy. We too should look with mercy on our fellow human beings. Christ died for their sins, too.
